like in math, you must know what the numbers & symbols represent in order to think clearly about the math problems, to actually solve math equations.
with concepts, theories, or arguments about the world, you should be clear about each word (like each number or math symbol) to formulate good/clear concepts, theories, arguments, etc.
oftentimes the words are difficult to be clear about.
we very well know what the definition of numbers are (w some exceptions).
