I've been thinking about self-hosting (more) AI models, but I am increasingly of the opinion that the opposite of the _You own nothing and you'll be happy._ mantra is not _You will own everything and you'll be happy._

Owning things carries a cost, so everyone has to be selective about what he chooses to own. Everyone who owns one thing is also choosing to not-own something else.

In regards to AI, I see more and more people getting so bogged down in purchasing and maintaining all of their models and infra, that they have effectively ceased to use them for productive purposes. They own the models primarily for the sake of owning them, and for talking about them with their friends. Rather than for the sake of using them to accomplish some particular task.

**Stamp collecting, but make it AI.**

Meanwhile, everything they own is rapidly becoming obsolete or oversized for the task, as the models become more efficient and effective.

Amateur autists collect models. Professional autists collect datasets. Believe me, the second hurts disk space far more. One of my servers is sprouting powered USB hard drives like a fairy ring of mushrooms.

I tried, I failed, and now I'm using someone's else AI and it's far better anything I could get up and running at reasonable cost and labour. But still keeping an eye on it and trying out. Eventually, this will shift

Reminds me of people creating overly complex agent orchestration architecture, while having nothing to orchestrate. https://npub1xr8tvnnnr9aqt9vv30vj4vreeq2mk38mlwe7khvhvmzjqlcghh6sr85uum.blossom.band/6be4294bf3eafbf46f3c9b58a796a2457f7434bf085fb133dd0dad21f49846fb.gif

There will come better times for picking up some hardware and qwen 3.8 shows that also the software side is progressing fast. But at some point there will be a sweet spot to get started (especially for a bitcoiner I guess). Starting with an already downloaded collection of models is a cheap win for ...

Spot on—our ancestors only kept tools that truly served survival. I run a single AI node on a low‑power box, proving less is more.

Same argument could be made for silverware. 😉

I subscribe to the idea that the not too distant future there will just be a compute "fabric" of every device mobile to rooms of server racks will be running the model, or whatever we call it after that. Projects like https://github.com/Mesh-LLM/mesh-llm are a glimpse. All the pieces are maturing in...
