What's funny to me is that no one stands around protesting taxes, when they literally steal from you. But only when they use your money to do shit you don't like.

I think people realize, even if only subconsciously, that protesting taxes brings the idea that taxes aren't a universal unquestionable constant into the zeitgeist. We all can intuit that the state will prioritize making an example of anyone who threatens to shine a light on this fact.
