Finished Junkoid!
This one was a bit anticlimactic after Super Junkoid DX, but that may be because I stumbled upon the final boss without doing much else. The game makes some vital quality of life improvements to the Metroid engine: onsen and baseball piles to restore HP and missiles respectively, no nonsense enemy placement allowing for damage between rooms, compact map layout instead of long tubes of naught but platforms. Some of the quirks of the base game are still there, but the adjustments go a long way for making this an enjoyable playthrough.
The aesthetics of the game remain whimsical, creepy, and terrifying like its sequel. Like its successor, this game takes the visual narrative elements a long way and offers gameplay fun enough but challenging enough to allow the player to enjoy and appreciate what the hacker has to offer.
One factor this game has over Super is the catchiness of the music. That was some good, simple chiptune, and Mindflower's work demonstrates the importance of simplicity when making music with the 2A03.
7/10. Not as thoroughly delightful as Super Junkoid DX, but that's almost certainly my bias against NEStroid showing through.
