Just when I think I'm getting somewhere... if it ain't one thing, it's another.

Well, that went almost entirely in the wrong direction, so I'm resorting to the tried-and-true method of double-layering meshes and hiding parts I don't need through texture-masking... that's how the gridlines between squares have a proper metallic effect on them now, but it's not ideal.

Slowly recalling how to make meshes from SVG files - this opens up a number of possibilities.

Decided to assemble this reference piece so I don't end up making more onyx textures than what's actually needed... that said, I haven't made unique onyx textures for the buttons in the middle yet, so they all just recycle the pattern from the upper left cufflink for now.
