Having been raised on Canadian military bases and been a civilian employee for a few years, I can tell you that the Canadian military was very well aware that the US was our biggest threat should they turn on us.

Well, yes, but that's still thicker than a paper bookmark. I would think that, especially in a paperback, it would warp the pages if left in for any amount of time.

They're cute, would be moderately fiddly. But using something that thick as a bookmark doesn't seem practical.

We're having a bit of a heat wave today!
