I agree on all your points.

Sorry I did not make clear that the article is not mine, but I quoted and linked to it.

I just agreed with the general sentiment and wanted to share.

"In my mind, the still low price of DDR3 adds support for my belief that consumers have no understanding of the fact that perfectly good used computers are available to anyone who is fed up with the high prices of new computers and parts. They don't seem to understand that they don't need a new computer to surf the Internet, write a letter, or talk to their friends on social media. They can do all of that easily with a good 8-12 year old laptop [or desktop computer] running Linux."

By default, LMDE was using the nouveau driver... but that didn't seem to be working. The app nvtop only showed the Intel graphics.

So installed the "nvidia-tesla-535-driver" package, which installed the proprietary nvidia drivers and removed nouveau. Had to reboot. After that nvtop showed both the Intel and nVidia GPUs.

Did have to download the latest version of #luanti and compile instead of using the version available as a package in Debian.

After that, luanti worked great and could play well over 60 FPS (the usual self imposed FPS limit - can be changed in the settings, which we did).

I will have to check to see what it is using.

Whatever LMDE loaded by default. It shows up as an option, both in the System Info and you can right click on applications in the menu and it has an option for "run with discrete graphics".

It runs pretty well on older hardware (back to a point).

My sons regularly play on their ThinkPad X220T laptops and it performs alright on the Intel i7 second gen processor and Intel graphics. Of course, it does a lot better on their desktop computers with dedicated Radeon graphics cards.

My daughter plays on her ThinkPad T470s and enjoys it on that laptop.

I think some of the "L" ThinkPad models are a good value.

I especially like that on the L15 and L14 Gen 1 and 2 that there are two memory slots and no memory is soldered to the motherboard.

In contrast, I recently got a ThinkPad T15 Gen 1 with soldered memory that's failing. I can't sell it that way, so will have to replace the motherboard or keep it around for parts in hopes that I'll be able to use them someday. Costly loss and frustrating.

Linux on a ThinkPad P51 laptop

I will be selling this laptop. Haven't set the price yet. Currently has 16GB memory (can be upgraded to 64GB) and 256GB nvme drive.

I wonder how well the NVIDIA Quadro M1200 Mobile graphics will play @nprofile1q... (minetest).

Well, there's a way to find out: apt install luanti
