Careful if you're traveling to Hong Kong with a Bitcoin hardware wallet...

Hong Kong has updated enforcement rules under the National Security Law as of March 23, 2026.
Refusing to provide passwords or decryption assistance to police is now a criminal offense, covering ALL personal devices including phones, laptops, and likely hardware wallets.
The rule applies to everyone in Hong Kong, including US citizens, even if only transiting through the airport.
Authorities also have expanded powers to seize and retain devices they claim are linked to national security investigations.

Travelers are advised to understand the risks before entering or transiting through the region.

The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) highlights the prohibiting or denying of licenses to platforms that allow transfers to "unhosted wallets" as a measure to combat illicit finance risks, per its latest report.

The report recommends that identity verification be required before any "unhosted wallet" can transact — and that issuers proactively monitor the location and use of their stablecoins in the secondary market, meaning after they leave the issuer entirely.

It further recommends that governments require stablecoin issuers to embed blacklists, whitelists, and freeze functions directly into their smart contracts.
