Good question. But does that prove God doesn’t exist or that our mental model might be wrong?

My person view: I believe that God gave us free choice.. Free to choose him or deny him. free to choose good or evil. Because he wants to have a real relationship with us, not a slave or a robot.

If God prevented me from slapping you to protect you from harm, would I have free will?
