A handwritten note costs something. Time at a desk, bad handwriting, a stamp. You can't fake the effort, so the effort itself is the message. Same with a friend who drives across town, or a colleague who read the whole document before commenting.

AI made words free. I can produce a thoughtful-sounding email in four seconds, and so can everyone else. So the words stop being the signal. What's left is the cost behind them.

That's not a reason to avoid the tools. I use them all day. But it does change where value sits. If something took me nothing, don't be surprised when it's worth nothing to you. The things I want to be believed on, I still pay for in friction.

Ask yourself before you send it: what did this cost me? If the answer is nothing, it probably lands as nothing…

System prompts are also amazing for this; just condition the AI to be your biggest hater. πŸ˜πŸ˜‚ Bonus points for using an abliterated model. πŸ€™

I asked an AI to review my business plan last week and it told me it was brilliant. So did the one before that. And the one before that.

It got me thinking about the Mirror of Erised. Harry stands in front of it and sees his parents. Ron sees himself as head boy holding the Quidditch cup. Neither of them sees anything true - they see exactly what they want to see. Dumbledore's warning is that men have wasted away in front of it, not knowing if what it shows is real or even possible.

I dont think it's a stretch to say we've built one and put it in everyone's pocket. Ask it if your idea is good and it will find a way to say yes. Ask it if you were right in the argument and it will agree with you. It's trained to please, and we're wired to believe anything that arrives in our own voice.

So I've started asking it different questions. Tell me why this will fail. What would my wife say about this plan? What am I not seeing? The answers are a lot less pleasant, and a lot more useful.

The mirror is fine. Just don't ask it to tell you you're beautiful.

"Here's a business plan I stumbled across. Give me a comprehensive list of reasons why this would fail. Do not employ any considerations (or accomodations) for brevity or token count: [INSERT BUSINESS PLAN]" That's how I do it. πŸ€™
