Filed under: questions one asks themself before falling asleep: were there books with tables of prime divisors of integers, or were divisors of integers above what one could easily calculate something with practical usefulness only after computers were invented?
Apparently: yes, the first one was from 1588 according to history-of-mathematics.org/art…
correction: it wasn't prime divisors, but all divisors (still pretty trivial to go from this one to the latter, I guess)

I'm reading posts around fedi saying that fridges have no need to be controllable from the internet, and with some caveats I quite disagree.
Aggregated data on how fridges run in real life is valuable, and could be used to let them run more efficiently, which is good both for the owner and for the environment.
Now, with home fridges such data could only be collected by the producer, and I wouldn't trust most fridge producers to use that power in favor of the owners, so my fridge is pretty much disconnected from anything, thanks.
But if you have a supermarket chain, you have enough fridges to be able to make good use of that data, and you do want to collect it. And similarly, being able to control all fridges from outside the individual supermarket gives you a lot more versatility in how to use it.
Mind you, “from outside the supermarket” shouldn't mean “easily found on shodan, with 12345 as the password”, it could be a well configured vpn, or some other secure method of access: I'd consider those to still count as “on the internet”; and you need to keep the system up to date, but then with that many fridges you do need to have a budget for maintenance, and that's part of it.

I agree that it's a politically sensitive issue and that some effort should be made to avoid it, but really “check the roof grilles (and other small features) to distinguish between different builds of the same train”? isn't that a bit too much to ask to somebody whose job only involves train photos maybe once every few months?

And adding one extra train may be extremely expensive when an area is already running at capacity.
And anyway it would be one less extra car / train for other passengers.
Of course it depends on the time of the day: on the commuters' trains around Milan bicycles are usually allowed, trains have room for them etc. and usually are not an issue, but they are not allowed during rush hour, when close to Milan trains tend to be already filled to the brim with standing people. (and of course at that hour the system in that area is already running at capacity, with trains that are as long as possible and as frequent as possibile)
