Pretty much anyone playing N64 homebrew will be doing it on emulator but flash carts are so cheap and easy to get now anyone doing it on hardware probably already has one.

@nprofile1q... @nprofile1q... hmm, the specifics are what make most fantasy consoles interesting though, like if you make a sega-like one the whole appeal is that the entire tiling and sprite system is part of the "console" like it was on an actual sega, not in the software you write. N64 era, weird hardware combo aside, you're still essentially just writing normal C code and pushing triangles to a graphics card.

@nprofile1q... @nprofile1q... you don't need a license past the 20 year expiration of the patents. clone N64's have been legal to produce and sell commercially since 2016, generally everything you find will just be a MiSTer in a pretty shell, though, but it will play the carts just fine.

@nprofile1q... somewhat of a tricky hardware generation for a fantasy console since it's really not THAT different from a modern PC outside of the APIs used and the slower speeds, not really like previous generations that had essentially pre-built functionality for the type of games the console was designed for in it's VDP, you'd pretty much achieve that effect by just considering SDL your fantasy console and giving hard size/memory limits.

@nprofile1q... there's honestly an incredible amount of jokes hidden in the codecs in the 3 first "solid" games, but there's also entire mechanics that are literally a joke too, like when fighting the old sniper in 3, the end, if you save and quit and wait long enough before playing again when you reload he'll have died of old age.

@nprofile1q... all over the place, they're mostly played straight which honestly makes them even funnier. some of my favorites are in 3 though, ignoring the secret theater (since it's on disk 2) like how if you keep calling in about the glowing mushrooms when you find them, then eat one, it becomes increasingly unhinged, or how in most of the games if you stare at the girls on the poster inside of some of the lockers and call out to different people on the codec.

@nprofile1q... are you using TPM based full disk encryption? if so it's likely it's detecting the hardware changed (something unplugged or turned off in the EFI?) or something blew away the keys (windows update can do stuff like this if you dual boot)

Hard to tell exactly without the actual full error message though.

Laura is the common spelling in the US, it's actually how Toby Gard originally spelled it as well, they changed it to "Lara" during development because they found that spelling more interesting and that actually led them into making her British (she originally wasn't)

@nprofile1q... Core2 is 64 bit, that's not the issue (many distros still support back to i486 anyways, so 1980's+). You likely have an issue with the EFI boot, make sure you're using an image that's EFI, + you need to use your mac's EFI manager to unlock choosing a device on boot then it should work.

You'll probably want to install rEFInd for booting as well, you can do it from OSX directly then you even get the nice boot menu
