my brother and I disagree on a lot. but I love him and know he's knowledgeable on a lot of things that I am not. we share a community of family, but there's definitely people he'd connect with on social media that I wouldn't. they might share something that he would boost and I would appreciate.

but most of fedi doesn't care about that. they'd fediblock them both and maybe my server for federating with them. definitely if AI allowed them on my server.

WTF are we here for?

I find #microblogging to be a frustrating misnomer.

the form matters because of the boost. the virality that it makes possible. more writing being read thanks to RSS was great but it wasn't social. and the term means people think less about what else could be shared. we end up thinking of podcasts or video requiring a different server/app, instead of building around the boost/reply structure. in the same way that we got podcasts by adding audio files to the feed item.

it's a social news feed.

the instance is a compromise to get more actual decentralization, recognizing that most people will go with the default. if that's true and we want decentralization, what we do is make them choose once instead of both host and app view etc. that way we get more people on different instances. what bluesky/AT does is make breaking it all apart possible while avoiding actually putting that choice to new users.

@dan

in theory, this is correct. but if we struggle to get people to pick an instance, we're not going to get most of them to pick a non-default host and then a non-default app. avoiding that by just pushing everybody to bluesky is why they grew so quickly and the ATmosphere is so centralized. and expecting this to happen is probably why AT was built after AP already existed and definitely why VCs thought they were a good investment. not saying this is a bit disingenuous.

"You are America. Unconstrained by habit and convention. Unencumbered by what is, ready to seize what ought to be. For everywhere in this country, there are first steps to be taken, there is new ground to cover, there are more bridges to be crossed. [.] The single most powerful word in our democracy is the word ‘We.’ ‘We The People.’ ‘We Shall Overcome.’ ‘Yes We Can.’ That word is owned by no one. [.] Oh, what a glorious task we are given to continually try to improve this great nation of ours.”
