We must find a way to make going to small, less expensive musical performances popular again. A regular thing we do every weekend, for the price of a movie ticket. Such shows provide a sense of community that is needed more than ever today. To stop feeling alone. To give life purpose. Amazing artists are all around us. The screens are not enough.

Private groups
Lately, I've been seeing various people claiming that fediverse doesn't have private groups. They often point to some task force at w3c that is supposedly working to fill the gap.

yea. I'm kinda torn. imo private groups are not social media, but social networking. they should be done via matrix. but then I also recognize that most people care more about private groups than they do anything more than consuming social media (algo media but also google and apple news feeds). so if I want people boosting and replying as part of a public square, I should probably promote systems that do both. something that is mostly like facebook but also somewhat like twitter.

AFAIK that's what @nprofile1q... has been saying too. that the OpenSubsonicAPI is not designed to allow for an app with perhaps thousands of individual artist websites as different sources of music, while allowing the user to treat it all as their "library".
imo that's what we need to make possible a better music ecosystem for musicians and listeners. @nprofile1q... and myself and others involved with fedi and #ccmusic didn't know the API existed till recently. just trying to not reinvent the wheel.

I'm glad you're trying but I'm generally not a fan of adding complexity, esp when most people already can't handle choosing a server.
The fedi I want looks like the web. We'd be able to follow "horrible" people and not get cut off from also following friends and the "best" people on other servers. the problem is norms not tech.

we'll never get close to that real life complexity here. that's why I'm focused on what we already figured out and try to understand what makes what we're trying to do so hard. my conclusion is it isn't. we're just trying to do diff things with similar tech/norms. impossible.
you want to grow. many don't. imo saying anybody can play my music is enough. they want direct endorsement.

social media is public. about attention. journalists care about it a lot. same with influencers. but we shouldn't write it off as bad. the problem arises with the ads, algos, data mining and corporate ownership. attention allocated collectively purely by the public is awesome and how we push back on a civics and culture dominated by wealth.
