In the video in the post I just boosted, @nprofile1q... says #Substack is now boiling the frog in a slow move from email towards lock-in. And of course they work with Nazis etc.

What we need is an effort between newsletter publishers like #Ghost #WordPress etc and reader apps like @nprofile1q... to build an ecosystem like podcasting. To make it smooth while remaining totally open. I'd argue for using #ActivityPub in addition to RSS to support boosts. Then we need decentralized money.

imagine all media is decentralized, like a podcast. created how you want and consumed how you want. no middleman involved.

then whether the work gets attention is democratically determined. no algos or ads, only the collective boosts of a decentralized social media network.

and the money flows directly to the creators based on time spent with the work, each of us giving monthly what we can, automatically distributed.

fuck their prisons.

Please consider that journalists, politicians, activists, governments and maybe most media creators want to maximize their reach, even if you do not want to use social media in that way. And a lot of them would like that to be organic, once they recognize the Faustian bargain of corporate algos etc.

Also how many of your family members would not be welcome to honestly express their political and cultural opinions here?

We're squandering the potential of #ActivityPub.

it doesn't have to be #bluesky

AT has some good decentralizing features but their core advantage over AP is the usability provided by the app view, a centralizing feature. it provides a global view of the network and enables better search etc than here. it's why their system appeals more to people used to the corporate platform than the fedi does. enabling that experience also enables centralized control over what its users see and its cost means very few of them will exist.

The leftist does not think VC is required to build tech businesses. Nor is #AI replacing our jobs inevitable. But lots of establishment Dem types do believe both of these things. They think they fight the good fight but at some level, they bought the corporate propaganda.

And this is why breaking the power of wealth to determine what ideas receive the most attention and constant reinforcement is ultimately more important than winning the next election (that matters too tho).

How do we act in cyberspace?

imo the question as it pertains to social media comes down to whether it is a place itself. Then I think we have to ask whether what matters here is more the convos or the boosting of content from somewhere else. I strongly believe the latter. It's an improvement on the open web. An attention layer we all create together.

Would we call the web a place? I don't think so because it is universal. Same with the fedi. A group of everyone is no group at all.

when you realize this is the average median voter, all the online debates about "why kamala lost" go out the window https://lionsmane.us-east.host.bsky.network/xrpc/com.atproto.sync.getBlob?did=did:p...

what I realized while knocking on doors for progressive candidates was that our problem was in the information ecosystem. this was largely before social media algos existed. education but moreso we must stop wealth from determining what most people pay attention to.

@nprofile1q...

there is a culture on the left that prioritizes the avoidance of anything upsetting for historically mistreated groups in such a way that it does lead to illiberalism, but it's nowhere near as bad as the right often claims. as you say, usually in their direct self interest. and they have no problem trying to silence the left for being pro Palestinian etc.
