@nprofile1q... I think overwhelming young people need hope to believe that it is possible to have secure lives in the future. I don't think most believe they should get it without effort, but there's a significant number who feel that they're working really hard and have no hope that anything can change for the better.

If you've been wondering about the claim put about by Nigel Farage & the Right that the majority in the UK receive more in benefits than they pay in taxes.... you will enjoy Emma Monk's detailed take...

@nprofile1q... I think anyone who has had open heart surgery or complex cancer treatment has likely had medical care worth more in financial terms than they've paid in a lifetime of taxes.

Which is as it should be. It's literally why we have taxes, charged (hopefully) fairly to pay for the benefit those in need. It's not a bank account where we individually have to pay out for the things we individually need.

Violence against NHS A&E staff is rising, driven at least in part by frustrations with waits for treatment, but also perhaps by a breakdown in social norms of respect for health workers? And of cours...

@nprofile1q... I think it is often about desperation. Sick people often find that they are unable to see a medic via the GP (or whatever) so end up in A&E where they wait for hours.

The A&E waiting room is an unpleasant place, mix in the stress of being ill and being passed from pillar to post and it boils over onto the nearest health professional.

The thing to remember in politics is that Govt's treat immigrants how they would like to treat the rest of us, if they could. If they are compassionate towards refugees & migrants more generally, the...

@nprofile1q... I increasingly think that the "elite" however one defines it have determined, largely randomly, that certain people are unwanted by society. And they've been able to press the buttons of the ignorant to vote against their own interests for policies that only benefit the elite.

The reality is that there are about 80% of the population who are seen as expendable and unwanted by the top 20%

Rafael Behr on why one of the major dangers from the right is a repackaged Trussonomics. Liz Truss' failure in the eyes of the Right is neither ideological nor economic, but rather presentational - f...

@nprofile1q... it seems like "not enough" is a common idea from the far-right which has captured British politics at the moment.

Brexit went bad because it wasn't enough
Truss had the right ideas but wasn't allowed to go hard enough
Tory crackdowns on migrants were not enough

It's a kind of muscular politics that tries to tell electors that the solution is a strongman. There's a word for that.
