First in Brazil and now for #NoKings there are reports our #SocialMedia overlords are tired of hiding in the shadows and have decided to take off the velvet gloves of 'tweaking the algorithms' and instead moved directly to the iron fist of blocking and banning accounts.

Yeah, it's #Meta again…

OK, I found it! A #manga about working as a software drone where the boss lays off the person keeping it all going and then the company falls apart. It's a coder revenge fantasy and it even teaches #Python!

(Also? The main character is a female programmer into #cosplay.)

I'm seeing people saying the Ukrainian strikes on Yandex data centers resulted in fewer right-wing bots posting and I'm seeing people deny there was any change.

I say we settle this by applying the Scientific Method: Repeat the experiment multiple times.

It seriously galls me to admit David Brin can be right about *anything*. But here is your reminder he predicted our current #privacy dystopia in 1998.

> The Transparent Society. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Transparent_Society

Sadly few have read this book. But if you feel privacy is a human right (as I do) then you might want to pick up a copy. It isn't a perfect predictor of today's world, but it nails certain aspects and their related politics.

And it suggests some fixes we should consider. Like 'sousveillance'…

“Offensively cheap.”

> #Solar Power Is Getting So Cheap That It’s Almost Unbelievable. https://futurism.com/science-energy/solar-power-renewable-energy-incredibly-cheap

> As Dave Jones, co-founder of the energy research firm Ember, told the FT, solar panels used to run between $5 and $6 per watt of generation capacity. That was 26 years ago. Today, Jones says solar panels sell for just 12 cents per watt — a price he says is “offensively cheap” considering the alternatives.

I see people talking about California's Prop 40, wondering how someone who has that kind of money will be affected in any significant way by a mere 5% tax.

But you see, when you are talking those kind of numbers it's not money anymore; it's power. And you don't keep power by giving up even a fraction of it.

I've eaten roasted grasshoppers and chocolate covered ants – I'll try nearly anything once. But I'll admit a bug-based diet seems kinda, "Eeeww!"

> Your dislike of eating bugs may be 9,000 years old. Ancient teeth and human DNA are revealing a surprising history of insect eating. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2026/08/260827010516.htm

FWIW? Chocolate covered ants taste like chocolate. Roasted grasshoppers taste sort of nutty and not bad, but you end up spitting out legs and bits of exoskeleton. Not recommended.

"There aint no such thing as a free lunch," was acronymed to 'TANSTAAFL' by Robert Heinlein in his novel 'The Moon is a Harsh Mistress'.

So, while I agree the saying itself is more evocative, I've gotta allow as TOFCIITM — which does sort of look like a Ukranian word — doesn't roll off the tongue quite as trippingly.

I remember a few things. For one, the 390 didn't have a stack register, but it did have 'Index Registers' which could be used in lots of interesting ways. Forex, for *fast* table lookup.

General purpose registers often had standard uses, especially when writing low-level subroutine code to be called by COBOL. Forex, R12 was the program counter, R13 was the address of the savearea, and R14 was the return address.

People of mastodon! Super weird question, but ... ... is anyone out there conversant in Assembly for a 1960s-era IBM 7090, or machines of that lineage? I'm working on an article that includes some ...

I did some BAL programming on a 390 nearly forty years ago. Even took a college class on it.

Honestly? I can't remember squat though. But most of my low-level professional work on the 390 was C. And I didn't even do much of that, because the bulk of the work was higher-level in DIAL and COBOL.

I wonder if I still have my old BASIC ASSEMBLY textbook?
