Skadi is gone. She went to sleep with all 4 of her parents around her giving her love and calming words of affection.

Garm is on my chest right now and Dante is on my legs. Garm and Dante were in their kennels downstairs and we had Skadi in our upstairs living room. They know what happened. As she was passing Garm started howling and Skadi tried to fight it because she heard him.

She is at peace now. No more fear and disorientation. And no more pain.

Skadi is going to sleep tomorrow morning. Her vet is doing a home visit. They are certain now she has a very rapidly growing brain tumor. She has declined staggeringly fast the last few weeks, and today she forgot who our Mini Schnauzer, Dante was. She has forgotten that outside is for potty. Her panic and disorientation episodes have been hitting earlier and earlier, to where she is in full freak out mode first thing in the morning now.

I’m going to be a mess for a while.

Skadi, acting like a puppy because of the dementia, was wandering around the yard. Someone dumped 5 approximately 4 week old kittens in our property. Because Skadi found them. They are too clean (they smell of floral shampoo), too well socialized with humans, and too healthy to be feral. No ticks. No fleas. No eye gunk. No obvious signs of worms or parasites. And they are well fed. It was also pouring rain an hour before Skadi found them, and they were not even a little damp. #kittensofmastodon

Seems this is going to be a fast burn with Skadi. The dementia is progressing faster than we anticipated. She is forgetting commands, has had a couple accidents in the house, and has been acting more and more like a puppy, especially when I have her outside.

Yesterday was a good day for her, but today went downhill fast this morning so I gave her 1mg Xanax (2mg is a bit much for her) and she is calm and chilling now.

Skadi had an episode about 3 hours ago, right on time for her second dose of Gabapentin of the day, and she got her first dose of Xanax ever with it. After about 20 minutes she started to calm down, and after an hour she was totally relaxed. She is now just chilling next to me.

Canine cognitive decline is such a rough thing to see advance, like any form of dementia. It robs our loved ones of so much.

My brain is tired and fried. Skadi is sundowning, but her episodes start around 1100am-12pm. Things have gotten so bad so fast, it is a reality that she might not make it to the end of the year before it gets to the point that putting her to sleep is the only humane, ethical, and moral option.

There is no stopping or slowing CCD, like all dementia. A stark possibility is she forgets who we, and/or our other two dogs are, and gets aggressive. That is worst case scenario.

@nprofile1q... no pet insurance. I had a really bad experience with that years ago when I found out they don’t cover chronic conditions with one of our dogs who developed arthritis and severe allergies. After years of paying premiums, they declined my claims because they said chronic lifelong conditions were not covered under the policy.

We have 3 dogs now, 4 at that time, the premiums were not worth it in the end.

@nprofile1q... Skadi is almost 10, but Cane Corso have shorter lifespans than a lot of dog breeds. Our middle child, Garm, is shelter special, we think Boxer/Lab/Pittie mix, and he is 9 now. He is aging so well, but he also had a misadventure last November that was a surprise $3500 vet bill. He holds the record at our vet for “the most foreign bodies removed from a dog’s stomach” as he ate 8 pairs of undies, 4 pairs of socks, hair ties, and 3 pairs of jeans… all in less than 10 minutes.
