GLP-1 drugs ushered in the plague in the series βSEEβ
By the 2040s, GLP-1 drugs are as common as aspirin β prescribed for life, starting in childhood, even added to some water systems in the push for a disease-free population. NAION, the rare optic-nerve stroke linked to semaglutide, is dismissed as a 1-in-10,000 fluke.
But at global, lifelong dosing across generations, "rare" stops mattering. What starts as scattered cases of sudden one-eyed blindness becomes a rolling wave of bilateral NAION β optic nerves losing blood flow faster than each generation can replace them.
The show's "virus" is the cover story survivors tell their kids, because "the medication we all took stroked out everyone's optic nerves" is harder to accept than a plague. When sighted children are eventually born again, it's not a mutation β it's just the first generation conceived after the drug left the water and the womb.
