#GeorgeOrwell published his novella #AnimalFarm on #ThisDayInHistory in 1945. Now used by right-wing nutjobs as an attack on #socialism, it was in fact a critique of statism, #totalitarianism, & party...

"Every line of serious work that I have written since 1936 has been written, directly or indirectly, against totalitarianism and for democratic Socialism, as I understand it."

– George Orwell. "Why I Write". Gangrel (Summer 1946).

Oh look, the boneheads from the Freedom Road Socialist Organization and Becker-cult Party of Socialism and Liberation have found a new issue to grandstand. They were media-whoring for months, loudly disrupting Portland City Council or Mayoral events, demanding that the City summarily revoke the permit for the ICE facility down on SW Macadam.

Problem is the law doesn't allow the City Council to summarily yoink the planning permit for a building. So the landlord, Stuart Lindquist, would have just gone to court and cancelled his cancelling.

Meanwhile, pushed by the public and the DSA councilors, the Council has pursued legal ways to restrict and financially penalize Lindquist — which of course takes a long time to go through various appeals.

But that's great for the authoritarian grupuscules because it gives them more time to jump up and down in front of cameras and pose as the brave defenders of justice with low risk — because Angelita Morillo isn't going to call the cops on demonstrators. And the show might work to attract more ill-informed people to their Leninist sects.

In college I was doing some research in the Jesuit Relations. These are reports back from the field by missionaries in New France in the 17th Century. So they were mostly in Ontario and Michigan.

I remember reading in one (paraphrasing), "The mosquitos are terrible, but Oh my God these black flies!!!"

Yep, checks out.
