An Airbus A350-1000ULR flew 23,076 km from Melbourne, Australia to Tolouse, France in a 24-hour test flight.

With the Airbus A350-1000ULR, Qantas will offer non-stop service from Australia to Europe and U.S. next year.

The ULR in its designation stands for "ultra long distance", a feat made possible by an additional 20,000-litre rear centre fuel tank fitted to Airbus's A350-1000 model.

Some not-so-good news from the NASA Swift Boost Mission.

Over the weekend, Katalyst’s LINK servicing spacecraft experienced issues with attitude control, causing the spacecraft to spin and resulting in sporadic communications.

Preliminary diagnosis: two of LINK’s three reaction wheels currently are not operable, and there is some loss of functionality in its cold gas thruster system.

Mitigation and fixes in progress.

Using data from NASA’s Hubble and ground-based telescopes at the Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory and Roque de Los Muchachos Observatory, spanning over 10 years, scientists at the Center for Astrophysics (CfA) detected the wake left by Siwarha as it ploughs through the outer atmosphere of Betelgeuse.

The wake causes changes in the star’s spectrum and in the speed and direction of gases in the outer atmosphere.

They too detected Betelgeuse B but with a lower 1.5σ confidence level.

The name Betelgeuse means “Hand of the Giant,” with “Elgeuse” being a historical Arabic name of the Orion
constellation. Given that α Ori B orbits the hand of the giant, the authors suggested its name be Siwarha, or “Her Bracelet.”

About the direct imaging of Betelgeuse B, the companion star of Betelgeuse -

The binary companion was long suspected to be the cause of the ~6 year variation in Betelgeuse's brightness.

Betelgeuse B is ~250x less bright than the parent star; estimated mass is 1x-3x that of the Sun; the angular separation is just 0.000014°. It was predicted to be at max. elongation in its orbit on 2024 December 6, when observations were made, without a coronagraph.
