@nprofile1q... I was never able to figure that out. But more than a little would cause too much CPU usage and this'd desync the printer port, and you'd get gibberish printed on the labels.
(but you had to move the mouse still, because if you didn't move it at all, the screensaver would kick in, and this used enough CPU to gibberish your labels)

and that's a whole complicated story on its own. but I gotta go back to working on less annoying systems now
BTW: this barely scratches the surface! I didn't mention the paper archives, the access+oracle hybrid, the PDA from 1982, the printer that broke if you moved the mouse "too much", the whole terrible period with mailing hard drives back and forth, the time I had to rewrite the python CSV module in a locked room with no internet, the snipers, the Nuremberg defense, the time I had to smuggle a USB drive in my shoe... working for the government was a real trip

so one day my manager says "alice, can we talk?" and we go outside away from the cameras and he's like "hey why's the FBI trying to get you fired?" and I had no idea.
Apparently I'd asked "too many questions" around the IT guy (and implied they weren't doing their job, which they weren't) and the IT guy talked to their FBI liaison and the FBI said to fire me, cause I'm probably working for the russians or chinese as a hacker

and the problem of the jpeg-tiffs was solved with hacking the TIFFCP source to handle the weird jpeg variant it used, so it could convert them to g4 compression and then run through the usual g4-to-pd...
