I saw a guy wearing a nylon shirt and matching cargo shorts, both clean but faded from too many washes, a plain non-matching ball cap, black sneakers, about 30 tools clipped to his belt, and a couple of ID badges. He was a phone lineman, maybe an electrician, perhaps a fiber optic engineer, with a broken in outfit he’d worn to work every day for months.

The perfection nearly caught my breath. Guy dressed like that, there’s not a room in the country where a security guard wouldn’t buzz him in.

Coworker: I’m going to squeeze in 1 more quick prod deploy.

Me: If you push to prod after 5PM on a Friday, I’m going to make you on-call all weekend.

Coworker: Hehehe! *deploys*

I'm speechless. I use to have a pretty high rank on Stack Overflow but hadn't been back in ages. Apparently, no one has. In early 2020, people asked 186,456 questions in a month. Last month, users asked 1,278. Without looking, I'm pretty sure this Mastodon instance adds more content.

I was trying to remove a Li-ion battery from a thing, and accidentally got its attention. Now the enspicified pillow is sitting inside a pyrex casserole dish on my concrete driveway, far away from anything else excitable.

Today, I learned.

This weekend I’m putting together a little cyberdeck from a Raspberry Pi, a 4.3 inch screen, and a tiny keyboard and trackpad.

Anyone who’s ever worked adjacent to IT knows better than to expect people to read the instructions. Doesn’t matter how clear they are, how publicly they’re announced, how urgent they’re explained to be.

Don’t ever, ever, design a critical process that involves people reading and following instructions. It’s dead on arrival.
