This confirms my comment to some extent as it also explains why the language of “unscrewing” is not appropriate. I would concede that if the lancets of the stinger are not deep enough for the barbs to gain traction then the bee can often live to fight another day. I have kept bees in the past and have observed some unenthusiastic stings!

Also untrue. Honeybees cannot unscrew their stings because their stingers don’t have a helical structure. They can remove their stings if they have stung another insect however. A nice story but not a true one. The fatal sting evolved for a reason. If the stings were not fatal more honey bees would die defending the colony.
