Writer (software and prose), epistemologist.
Fedi user since 2019 → fedi dev → quit fedi → [you are here].

I contribute (roughly at random, my brain is too ADHDified to stick with a software project for too long) to a lot of projects, and help upkeep some of the akkoma project's infrastructure (among others).
Besides that, I do some (interesting to me but probably not to you) CS research and make random things that I find useful/interesting.
I want software to be beautiful to read, and to spark joy at runtime, a bit like (some) writing (though my prose is not that).

Assigned "Tumblr Lesbian" by my gay wife, confirmed by fedi.

Sometimes my wife (Hélène) posts on my account.
If you want to know whose post a particular one is, you must pick up the honored internet tradition of identifying people by vernacular, punctuation, and way of thinking.

one thing I'm learning is that the less you do, the easier it is have imagined competency
i.e. to "play it all out in your mind", "just do X", etc
no mindgamed out approach survives impact with the real world, which is one of the reasons practical experience matters so much (since fedi leans techie, imagine the difference between reading a bunch of specs and then actually using the thing and implementing the specs; the actual difference is several times stronger than that)

however, a lot of people that actually do stuff in practice are truly well incompetent, in spite of their practical experience, full on lost and confused

you might think these two are contradictory, but I think it isn't
the synthesis of these seemingly contradictory concepts is part of what I wanted to write about in the experience blog post…
you'll just have to wait for me to feel like picking it up again

@Tlapka🐾 :neocat_phone: yes! polyester is a category of polymers (plastics) that contain 1-2 ester in each part of the main chain, meaning there are many types of polyester
some of them can be made into fibers (same as cotton)
USUALLY polyester intended for clothes is of a specific type (water-resistant) and they're branded as simply synthetic clothing, or it's mixed in with other fibers like rayon
BUT there's also some polyesters that are used and marketed as imitation cotton (either alone or mixed)
and indeed yeah there are other polyesters that are used for things like packaging via PET

@Haelwenn /элвэн/ :triskell: @dmi 💽 requiring a mode is lame because it makes things a lot more verbose than the legacy hdX macros
default would avoid footguns while maintaining UX
(I got bitten by this recently because I forgot a \ so my -snapshot wasn’t picked up oops; lesson to put it BEFORE I guess)

@Blurry Moon I just do that without AI already ^^
the reason I don't put out much is I then end up with brainworms going "you can make this polished and useful to not just yourself" and then get stuck in the muck
but the smol one-offs I make very regularly, I just don't publish them :0

Anyone wants to start a news feed with me?

Difference from lwn: the news is very minimal; essentially giving you the full link to read and the smallest useful summary (e.g. on software release, the headline features; on mailing list drama, the subject of discussion / potential consequences).
Difference from phoronix: applicability is both wider and narrower. No attempt to make money off of it, so news is restricted to news we find interesting ONLY. However it also means it need not be restricted to tech only, multiple feeds per category possible.
Difference from slashdot: the feed is all there is. There’s no website, there’s no comments. There’s an anonymous feed viewer in lieu of a “website” but no long-lasting stuff. Ring buffer of the last 100 posts per feed or whatever keeps a hard cap on costs; the client side can handle persistency of things you want to keep around.
Difference from magasines: no release schedule, you just post when you hear something interesting. Format is closer to lobsters/lemmy anyway.

The idea would be that I build the thing and have a very simple API so I can give people tokens (that have a list of feeds you can post to) and you use a bookmarklet or whatever to make the post. The author is marked in RSS metadata so if someone is seen repeatedly making posts that suck / aren’t interesting / spam (but I don’t believe that one) it can be discussed.

It is time! I am once again on the hiring grindset. I'm gonna have more openings shortly tm (this week), but one's already ready!

The job is to work on industrial monitoring, specifically in the transport and energy sectors. You will be regularly visiting clients, figuring out what their problems are (not just asking, they're usually resigned to suffer in silence), and finding ways to solve them.

"But I don't like transport, it pollutes the planet." I have great news! Most of the company's clients are moving to electric vehicles now! The energy sector contracts? They want to monitor green energy (currently mostly wind). They go to this company precisely *because* they have more experience with not just thermal engines, but also the funny electrical gizmos (they looked into OCPP back when nobody was using it, for example, and now are ahead of everyone else). If you work in transport, this is one of the places where you can actively contribute to being greener (another example: there are setups to monitor when a vehicle should be recharged, and what kind of driving habits are more economical in practice for electric engines).

"OK, what's the catch?"
You'll have to move (and be allowed to work in) to Versailles, France. If you're already around there (or can otherwise make the trip *regularly*). You'll also have to go to the clients' place of work on the regular. The soft skills aspect is almost *more* important than the technical aspect, and the technical side is quite wide. We don't expect you to be a master of all the technical details, but you should be an expert on at least one of them (you can probably figure out what they are, things like CAN 2.0, etc); otherwise just high-school level understanding of power, electricity. And of course, you gotta not be afraid to open a vehicle up and start digging in - you'll be working with field technicians, garagists, and other technical staff; they need to be able to respect you. Language-wise you must know English and French, and German is greatly appreciated.

The salary range is 35k to 65k EUR, dependent on how many technical aspects you're an expert on (while the soft skill side determines whether you get hired at all).
If that sounds like something you'd be interested in, feel free to send me a fedi DM and I'll give you the complete job posting and instructions on how to apply (so you can skip some of the initial filtering steps, I prioritize candidates over fedi).
