Today I learned:

Before marking up emphasised passages in a text using italic type or bold type became a thing, there was rubrication: the practice of writing important passages and other parts of a text that required emphasis in red ink.

This did not only include cases we would use italic type for today, but also things like headings or initial letters in a line.

And occasionally, rubrication was used to mark up instructions, e. g. for a priest; the black coloured text would be the text to be spoken aloud, and the red coloured text would contain the instructions for the speaker.

Scribes would sit in their scriptorium (if they had one) and just mark up emphasised passages in red ink. Such scribes were called rubricators.

Some bible editions, called Red Letter Editions, used red ink to mark up words spoken by Jesus Christ specifically.

i. e. geared towards longer and shorter text and multimedia posts, with extensive social network features and rich profiles. More Facebook or Myspace than Twitter or Instagram.

i self-hosted friendica ages ago and that was a nightmare; it's also not activitypub-first, so federation constantly broke. diaspora is even less compatible.

and other than that i'm not aware of any.

Full disclosure: I personally have not used any BSDs before.

I am not sure whether the BSDs are really going to be those steadfast anti-AI warriors that some people make them out to be today in the light of the Debian-going-AI and Linux-going-AI news.

From what I can tell, the main philosophical difference between the various Linuxes and BSDs have always been two things:

Licensing
Modularity

BSDs generally seem to disagree with the copyleft ideal of the GNU licences and instead prefer their own lax, permissive licences that allow proprietary and all other kinds of nasty commercial uses. This does not appear to be a very trustworthy stance when we're talking about AI.

And regarding modularity, BSDs seem to err on the side of authority, preferring their base system to be one unified opinionated whole that's in turn designed to be as cohesive and functional as possible; while the Linuxes sacrifice that stability for user choice and modularity in a big patchwork. But this is also not a particularly appealing stance for someone who enjoys customisation and realises that sometimes, important software projects turn out to be problematic or compromised and need to be abandoned quickly.

it becomes very obvious who the genuine good-faith progressives are, and who the people are that think that 'progressive' meas 'being contrarian against anything popular for the sake of it'.

I'm obviously not trying to say that not enjoying GTA is somehow problematic lol. You're allowed to dislike any game of course.

But I am saying that it's very obvious that a lot of people on my timeline today don't even have an opinion on things other than 'whatever is popular is for primitive stupid icky cis guys lol ew'.

They don't even care about GTA itself, they just want to butt in on a day everyone else is excited for something, to loudly signal that they're superior to all those 'normies' and they are definitely immune to and intellectually above pop culture.

Not even to mention that actual harassment thrown at people who say they like the GTA series or they're looking forward to GTA VI? that's so ridiculous.

I loved the GTA series, I grew up with it, it was a big part of my teens, it was an autistic special interest of mine back then (I was a big gta wiki contributor for example) and I am somewhat looking forward to the new title too. Sue me I guess
