OK, quick question:
I have an old monitor (Dell, 2016) that mainly connects via VGA
I’d like to use it with my laptop
bearing in mind that:
my laptop doesn’t have a VGA port, but it does have USB and HDMI ports
Is it possible to connect the monitor to this laptop? If so, what sort of adapter would I need?

Yes you can get an HDMI to VGA adapter for like $4 that will work perfectly.

Your monitor also has a DisplayPort, that can give you better resolution, refresh rate, etc. really only matters for gaming. You can get HDMI to dvi adapters too
