Broadway just killed its most-awarded new musical of the season after only five months.

Cats: The Jellicle Ball won three Tony Awards, made history with the first openly trans woman to win a Tony for costume design, and was grossing close to a million dollars a week. It still couldn’t survive.

Andrew Lloyd Webber says the American theater is in “dire danger.” He’s right — but the reason isn’t what most people think.

This isn’t really a story about taste, diversity, or streaming. It’s a story about money. When production costs triple (or more) while the dollar quietly loses value every year, even successful new work gets crushed by the math.

Broadway had its biggest year ever in ticket sales. At the same time, most new musicals are closing inside four or five months.

The same pattern is showing up across the arts — ballet companies cutting roles, orchestras struggling, regional theaters shrinking. Different cities, different disciplines, same underlying pressure.

If you’re an artist trying to build something that lasts longer than the next budget cycle, this is worth understanding.

Alana Mediavilla, the Puerto Rican filmmaker behind Dirty Coin and founder of Campo Libre, sits down with Bitcoin For The Arts for a two-hour conversation about the making of the most important documentary on Bitcoin mining ever made.

She spent more than a decade inside Silicon Valley producing for Google, Apple, PayPal, Volkswagen, and Volvo. In 2020 she walked away, moved her family home to Puerto Rico, and built Dirty Coin from the ground up. Lindey Magee shares how she used the Bitcoin from her late husband’s life insurance to fund her children’s book — even though it meant spending what could have been long-term wealth.

She explains that she did it because she believed the book would matter. Dion responds by pointing out that she operated with true low time preference and created something with real generational value.

This is a beautiful example of Bitcoin enabling creators to build things that can outlast them.
