Talked to someone who has been dabbling in translating fiction. This guy was horrified when I told him that if he uses machine translation for more than dictionary checks of individual words, he can't put his name on the translation and the work is ineligible under most standard publishing contracts.

"OMG, but then it would take FOREVER to translate a novel!?!?"

Those who can't tolerate gay people often say that they find it disgusting to imagine them having sex.

Thinking about this just now, I realised that maybe I wouldn't be exactly disgusted, but I can't think of a single straight couple I know where I would imagine them having sex with any kind of enthusiasm. I mean, eew, embarrassing. Why would I want to do that?

The hardest murder cases to crack are the ones where the perp attacks a random stranger. And among those, the hardest ones are where the perp does this just once and commits no other crimes.

Two such cold cases in Sweden have recently been solved with genealogical DNA. Linköping and Brattås were both double murders, each apparently because victim 2 tried to save victim 1. Both perps proved to be mentally ill or disabled shut-ins, each acting during a brief insane spell. No evil plan.

You may think that if you boil an egg for 7 minutes, cool it to fridge temperature, then boil it another 3 minutes, you will get a 10-minute egg with a solid yolk.

You do not. It's still a 7-minute egg. To get a 10-minute egg, you have to boil it for 7+10=17 minutes total.
