@:newt: Zanzibart, forgive me... @nprofile1q... I spec'd my VM with 8 you can get away with a lot fewer, but I keep mine high for when I compile Ruby or whatever during upgrades.

I have 16GB of ram for the same reason but you could get away with 8 during normal operations. If you really want to be stingy you thin provision to like 4cores8GB and then increase to 8core16 when you upgrade and then swap back the config if your VPS allows non storage upgrade.
