Many years ago, my sister and were trying to persuade each other to read a book the other was resisting. She wanted me to read "Anna Karenina", and I wanted her to read "Moby Dick".

The deal was this: I would make an abridgement of "Moby Dick", (I took a ballpoint pen to my cheap paperback copy), specially guaranteed not to bore her. We called it "The Good Parts Version". I then read this version aloud onto cassette tapes and mailed them to her.

After the first few tapes, she replied, "Why was I never told Moby Dick was funny!?", demanding the next set of tapes as fast as I could read them. After she finished the tapes, she went and got herself a copy of the whole book, curious to see what I had left out. She fell in love with it, read it multiple times, and made artwork based on it. "Why wasn't I told it was FUNNY" turned out to be the crucial point that hooked her in.

(I did make it through "Anna Karenina", which, alas, was not funny, and did not become a favorite of mine, but hey, at least I read it).

Then there are the LibriVox "Insomnia Collections", readings deliberately selected to be as boring as possible. Can't beat a pamphlet on Copyright Law, or a dissertation on Yeast, or the history of Umbrellas, for putting one to sleep! (I was an occasional contributor, droning my way through the Rules of the Road at Sea in Collection #4).

Agree, Louise Erdrich, Joy Harjo, Robin Wall Kimmerer are all frequent re-reads lately for me too. Usually I read from the library to save money, but I bought my own copy of "Braiding Sweetgrass", I love it so much. N. Scott Momaday is also good, although it's been awhile since I last read him, (reminds me I need to revisit).
