Pulled my first ever potato harvest. Its only two plants but the stems were rotting and I was worried id lose the roots. (Is that a thing?)
Wish I could have left them longer as there were tons of tin...
not sure what killed them off early like that, but those small potatoes are all "seed" potatoes and any left in the ground will probably sprout. its a myth that using little potatoes makes smaller potatoes. any of what you harvested is viable as seed for next season.
root crops are designed by nature to break up compacted soil. in conditioned soil, the roots don't have "obstacles" to grow around. that's why potatoes do better in raised bed, but the soil needs to be good too, to produce strong, healthy plants. adding new compost/soil in a bed is important or you're just depleting it soil year after year.
its fun to grow stuff for your family, but potatoes are cheap. I would consider replacing with higher costing produce. get more bang for your buck... so to speak. :)
