Yup. Tradeoffs, only worth it if your time is cheap and you invest in the tools to fix em. From someone who used to modify old vehicle firmware professionally.

Can you let me know what model? As far as I have seen the Nokias run a "nokia os" afaik was an android-like base. They still have modern radios and features like BT and wifi and such?

Be me. Drive a 25 y/o hoopty. Listen to the exhaust drone, and cheap analog watch XD

Don't think it's any better in terms of privacy, but it's a lot cheaper (or was, haven't looked into mobile plans in a long time), and it would condition me into not using it or relying on it often such that I could turn it all off and use it only when I need it out and about. I'm not away enough ...

It also give me a little more ownership or control over my phone number. If it's a DID owned by my account on my SIP provider, I can provision that number to any device I want with my pbx, I don't need permission from my mobile carrier to which device/sim it belongs to. I can move carriers without w...

Good chance I'm considering going opposite though. A cheap data-only SIM. My pbx handles routing, emailed voicemail transcription etc. I was looking into the newer Garmin GPS recently and might pull the trigger. Also they make those cheap SIM capable mobile routers with battery packs and wireguard b...

I've often fantasized about hacking a receipt printer to print out what normally we check apps for - todo lists, RSS feed updates, crossword puzzles, etc - imagine anything you glance at on a phone, but printed out once or twice a day and waiting for you. you pick that up and go have your coffee with paper and pens. your smart phone migrates more and more towards being "a phone" again, for timely, urgent contact. computers and tablets for focused, intentional work)

Big fan of this. I'm getting ready to put a handset back on my desk. Call me at home XD. On phone though, I have been running a pbx and a set of cisco ata for my commercial number. Voipms just recently included free SMS options for some plans I haven't looked into yet though.

Very cool. if thermal printer gotta watch out for BPA

I had a similar fantasy. Only a normal printer for RSS articles. The printer would sit in a public place, and it would spit out cool stuff for people to read. There are LaTeX templates that can make it look like news paper. It would be easy to automate.
