it's their right to do so. this is the nature of freedom of association - a concept that humans are familiar with, but traditional social networks are actively hostile towards, for "platform reasons".
imagine if you couldn't use your natural web of trust in your IRL life, and were forced to associate with everyone all the time even if you desired to limit it to your preferred community?
