@Elric

Elric. Geek. Software engineer (for now?). Unaugmented human being. Swears like a sailor. Loves tea. Somewhere on the spectrum. Which spectrum? Probably most of them. Remembers the internet when it was still a force for good.

Elric's Melniboné was a waning empire ruled by an amoral indolent hedonist class who let slaves tend to their every whim.. That's beginning to sound familiar.

@nprofile1q... Is this a bug or intended behaviour? It seems to be impossible to restore a backup from another device if you accidentally close the backup screen before entering the original recovery code.

Once that happens it becomes impossible to enter an existing recovery code, and you can then only create a new one, which results in the error that the backup cannot be decrypted because "the recovery code is most likely not the one that was used to make the backup".

@nprofile1q... There are no absolutes. Neither in privacy nor in justice.

Encryption is not incompatible with laws or justice. Weakening encryption, or enabling more surveillance of a vast majority of innocent people by mandatory device attestation *is* incompatible with a free society.

You live in a place with a government that is above average when it comes to trustworthiness, but please don't assume that this is the case everywhere.

@nprofile1q... This is the first time I find myself rooting for you to be wrong. The future seems to suck. I don't like it.

I disagree on a visceral level that strong privacy guarantees is "crime-enabling". At the very least it's a double edged sword, but I'll refrain from getting on that soapbox for fear of being labeled a "privacy advocacy tech bro". It's only the final two words that I take offence to, obviously.

@nprofile1q... I don't think it's controversial as such. But the typical small, old, terraced house was not designed with A/C in mind. There is often nowhere to put the outdoor unit without annoying the neighbours with noise. There's typically not much headroom on the UK power grid during peak A/C times. And in most parts, until recently, there were only a few hot days a year which meant A/C didn't make much sense.
