I do web/backend development for some freelance clients, and I charge hourly with breakdowns of why it took the charged time. I find they find it a reasonable explanation of why I charged $2-3k or an equivalent large sum

I also prefer that to quoting per project since it is rare for me to be given all the info at the onset for a fair quote or for the task not to change over the development course. Also, sometimes certain things I thought easy weren’t or vice versa.

But it is nice to have the choice between the two as I do for my self employed side gigs. I’d definitely take per project pricing at my day job since those are easier to forecast and I could pour lots of time into maxing out my own productivity as I’m incentivized
