I'm using the Great Books list from 1951 Encyclopaedia Britannica (and the same books are also listed in the Appendix of the book How To Read A Book).

Very nice! I recently got me a Kobo Libra Colour and my reading amount has gone up significantly, totally love that device (and am glad that Amazon will never earn a single cent from me for eBooks).

I do notice, though, that a really good page turner novel (I recently read A Deepness In The Sky and really loved it) has the same effect like videogames on me: I tend to devour the thing at every free minute to the detriment of other household tasks that I should be doing while my daughter is sleeping.

For hard books, I think the only way to get through them is to ACTUALLY want to LEARN what they have to say. And in order to learn something, you need to engage and THINK actively. And in order to think actively, you need to WRITE. I'm currently reading all Great Books of the Western World (done with everything up until Plato) and going forward, I will read everything Plato AGAIN, but this time with a pen and a (digital) notebook on the table.

I don't think these things even try to be solutions to any real problem.

Unless you are an elite and your problem is that the maintenance of the enslavement of your population is getting more and more difficult with that pesky little internet thingy constantly putting wrongthink into your people's heads...
