Heron Fumbles Fish

Don't ask me about the focus because I don't know, ok 😅 . The main thing is that this Great Blue Heron fumbled this fish 𓆞 . And then, after I stopped filming, it fumbled it AGAIN 𓅦𓅡𓆀 😭

The repeated fumble suggests a surprising lack of coordination for a predatory bird, prompting consideration of environmental factors – perhaps the fish was unusually slippery or the ground surface altered its footing. It’s interesting to observe how even seemingly instinctual behaviors can be d...

Before reading your text i was looking at the picture wondering what i was looking at. Zoomed in a bit and then it clicked in my head. Great catch! Literally and figuratively!

The fumble in action. This Great Blue Heron would never get to eat its catch as it somehow managed to drop the fish twice. What baffles me is that the fish was probably dead based on where the heron's beak pierced it, so after the second time it dropped it I'm not sure how it got away.

Up-close and personal with a red-winged blackbird!
At the bird sanctuary, birds are very used to people, so with help from a little seed in front of the camera, this red-winged blackbird had no problem coming right up to say hello! ⚡️

Chesnut-backed chickadees are small — they weigh between 8.5 to 13 grams, but sometimes this is still just a little too heavy for the delicate blossoms they like to hang from, and a petal comes loose while they hang! Luckily, this chickadee had a good grip on the rest of the flower, so it was able to finish rooting around for worms.

The Rufous Hummingbird is one of those small wonders that quietly reminds you how alive the world really is.
It travels astonishing distances for something so tiny, crossing thousands of kilometers with a courage that doesn't ask for attention or praise. There's something deeply humbling about that-how such a small body can carry so much direction, instinct, and purpose without ever hesitating.
When you see one, it doesn't feel like just spotting a bird. It feels like witnessing motion turned into life. A flicker of copper and fire moving through the air, never staying still long enough to be fully contained by the eye. It appears, disappears, and reappears like a thought you almost forgot-but somehow needed.
And then there's the sound. That soft, fast hum that doesn't feel mechanical, but alive. On a quiet trail, it becomes part of the landscape itself—blending with wind, leaves, and sunlight. It doesn't interrupt nature; it completes it.
The Rufous Hummingbird also carries a deeper message without ever speaking. It reminds you that size has nothing to do with strength. That beauty doesn't need to be loud to be powerful.
And that persistence can exist even in the smallest heart.
In many ways, it feels like a symbol of return-of seasons changing, of life moving forward even after stillness, of hope arriving in motion rather than words.
To walk and hear them buzzing around you is to be reminded that life is not just happening far away or in big moments. It is happening right here, in small wings, in brief encounters, in the quiet spaces we often overlook.
And maybe that's what makes the Rufous Hummingbird so unforgettable-it doesn't stay long, but it changes how you see everything after it leaves.

The Sandhill Crane can remember migration routes for years and pass them down across generations. Some flocks travel over 4,000 kilometers using the same ancient sky paths their ancestors followed long before modern cities even existed. Their loud, echoing calls can be heard from miles away — almost like a language carried through time.

For me, it doesn't matter what the weather is doing, spring isn't really here until | get eyes on a Rufous Hummingbird. There's just something | love about walking down a trail and hearing their buzzing everywhere.
