A powerful photograph — but the viral caption attached to it is historically wrong.
This image is often circulated online as if it dates back to 1917 and is connected directly to the Balfour Declaration. It does not.
The photograph was taken three decades later, in 1947, and shows the Theodor Herzl, a ship carrying thousands of Jewish refugees from Europe during the final years of the British Mandate in Palestine.
The confusion comes from mixing two separate historical events.
1917 refers to the Balfour Declaration — the famous 67-word statement issued by the British government expressing support for the establishment of a “national home for the Jewish people” in Palestine, while also stating that the civil and religious rights of the existing non-Jewish communities should not be prejudiced.
1947 is the context of this photograph.
The distinction matters. Historical images are powerful evidence, but only when the date, event, and context attached to them are accurate.
History is already complicated enough. It doesn't need a false caption.
