Level 0x2F, Neutral Evil, Technomage. I love UNIX systems, especially FreeBSD, and build carrier grade networks for fun and profit. I'm also a musician, historian, and a pretty decent cook. Lover of fuzzy animals of all sorts, but especially the kleptomaniacal, tube shaped ones. I have a dog named Hazard Dax of whom I will share a near endless supply of pics.

I had managed to neglect ntpd as a local service on my home network of late. I've been naughty and just been taking the defaults from the FreeBSD installation.

@nprofile1q... to the rescue!

A four line Bastillefile sets the rc.conf variables(usually already set, but its nice to make sure), grabs my standard ntp.conf, and restarts the daemon. The same template gets included in my "standard" deployment template, so going forward I don't even think about this. A separate roci template can be used to promote a server to a local ntpd server.

No bells, no whistles, no GUIs, no flash; just results.

nuintari's rules of networking 0x39:

Trying to make arbitrary numerical resources 'line up' is an ever losing battle that will only serve to create pointless consternation and cause reckless waste of finite resources. Instead of trying to make things line up in a logical fashion, focus your efforts on better documentation.

The best compliment I could’ve ever received! Why don’t you artist types ever describe technology in technical terms? How do I know if you are correct or not! My reply? That’s the whole point! H...

@nprofile1q... This was a fun read, thank you!

I have never willingly, if even knowingly, used a passkey in my life. I looked at the ecosystem surrounding them, and noped right the duck out. A gilded cage, how very apt.

I took a deep dive into MFA in 2012 or so with Yubikeys, and have since even stopped using Duo's and Google's authenticator apps in favor of a self hosted solution.

This works for _me_.

But I sure would like something easier for the family I support. I may have to explore this for their sake.

Thanks again!

Hey #IT friends! I want to hear the dumbest things you have ever heard said in a professional setting!

I've got two to get this party started.

The first was at my first MSP job (A job I will never do again), I was trying to create a more streamlined deployment for Fortigate firewalls (yes, eww). When I explained the idea to my boss Casey, he responded with, "Well, that sounds nice, but we have a healthy mistrust of automation here."

WTF? You work in IT and don't trust automation?! You should consider a new line of work.

The second was when I met the imfamous Chris at $weCantSellFiber, literally my first day on the job. Those who have followed me for some time know much about Chris. While discussing VLANs and Q-in-Q, he uttered something so incredibly stupid, that it set my impression of him from that day forward. He said, "Well, Q-in-Q doesn't always need an S-tag and a C-tag. It can use two C-tags or two S-tags."

My impression of Chris deteriorated over the next year or so. Then he got fired.

So, who has some true dumbassery to add?
