I think he was a genuinely good guy. On his appearances for the Johnny Carson show he often referenced his time in the Corps. Carson was a Navy vet and McMahon was a retired USMC colonel (Reserve) but it was always with funny human anecdotes about other Marines, I never found a single clip where talked about his experiences in combat. I believe he fought depression and what we now call PTSD symptoms. He referenced both occasionally in his comedy.
