Hrm, that seems to work, but also causes e.g. a new Thunderbird window to spawn behind the inbox pane, requiring an alt-tab to see it. I'm hoping to just do this for dialogs.

Is there a good way (in #Gnome) to prevent dialogs from background apps from popping up in the foreground, stealing focus? A search turns up people complaining about this for 10+ years, but no reliable solutions.
