Trump officials say Israel’s plans helped lead the US into Iran war

The Trump administration and its allies in Congress presented a shifting new justification Monday for the U.S. attack on Iran, with House Speaker Mike Johnson suggesting that the White House believed #Israel was determined to act on its own, leaving the president with a “very difficult decision.”

Johnson said the attack on Iran was a “defensive operation” because Israel was ready to act against Iran, “with or without American support.” He said President Donald Trump and his team determined that #Iran would immediately retaliate against U.S. personnel and assets.

The remarkable shift in the Trump administration’s stated rationale comes as the hostilities deepen and widen across the region. The president himself estimated the war could drag on for weeks. The administration plans to seek supplemental funds from Congress to support the effort.

The numbers reflect how support for #Israel has become deeply contentious in the U.S., with profound implications for American politics and foreign policy. The changing sentiment has been largely driven by Democrats, who are now much more likely to sympathize with Palestinians. U.S. assistance to Israel has been a major dividing line in the party’s primaries this year.

Gallup’s data indicates that the shift was already happening before Hamas attacked Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, then increased during Israel’s subsequent military operations in #Gaza. The #polling has a margin of error of ±4%, meaning sentiment toward Israelis and Palestinians are roughly even.

This year, independents expressed more sympathy for the Palestinians than the Israelis for the first time in Gallup’s trend.

I just wish I knew of any more options for news about any efforts, or even just toothless pontificating (because that’s still more than nothing) on left-aligned organizing along meat-and-potatoes class based issues… building a coalition and winning elections a platform of helping workers and the poor regardless of their idpol alignment. if you’re a broke mf or a working stiff, we will fight for your ability to live with basic economic dignity and be helped if you’re sick, period.

I follow the Drop Site and Breaking Points axis but they’re not laser focused (and Gaza is important, don’t get me wrong, it’s just not what I’m talking about here) and they’re also journalists, not true thought leaders™ and/or trench fighters, if that makes sense.
