@nprofile1q... the old VHF transmitter used by the Emergency Services at Kippax had a large chimney on it to conduct away heat from the valves in the endstage, some engineers from DTELS/NTL (now Arqiva) said on their retirement reminiscence group there was a shelf around part this chimney and those working on night shift maintenance would put pies form the pie shop on top to keep them warm..

Going by the registration plates of the vehicles, this seems to be a semi rural area in China.

I don't unfortunately know enough Chinese to read the signs, but I think its some kind of place where the local community gather (including ducks 🦆 )

The series is set in the more affluent outer suburban/semi rural areas of the Thames Valley in SE England.

I'm a PoC from Britain and spent a lot of my youth there - in the suburb of Reading known as Caversham, bordering South Oxfordshire, where my parents moved after London got too sketchy in 1970s due to race riots.

Demographics of Midsomer *are* accurate - region gets much "whiter" further away you move from London and big multicultural towns like Reading and Slough, and TBH although level and causes of serious crimes are ofc exaggerated for books/telly, real life crimes aren't /that/ far off sometimes (until 2005 when cops got digital kit you could listen on radio scanner, both me and the cat would sit and listen (he'd alert me if I missed anything 😸 )

Encona is not Chinese, but my dad was and he liked the stuff, which might be why its in the Chinese supermarket - they are often run by folk from Hong Kong and Malaysia (where Dad was from) and thus follow food trends from these countries (which are as expected still influenced by the impact of colonialism, so products from other parts of the former Empire often travelled many km)

It is too hot for me these days (as are some other spices) - the effects even had me scouring 111 website and worried for my long term health (as I could handle this no problem when I was younger) until I found an article from Straits Times which confirmed losing your tolerance for spices can be a normal consequence of ageing (so enjoy them whilst you can!)

@nprofile1q... depends on the species of them - the small ones that grow wild in England and Northern Europe had to be consumed in some quantity for a decent trip (something like about 20-30 per person) - there are others that seem to be more common in USA (but can be grown indoors in Europe - they were slightly larger and you only needed a few of those, maybe 2 or 3

(I encountered them around 2005, via a friend who was originally from Canada and could source things like this)

@nprofile1q... and after they fucked up the scene (by escalating various situations to the point authorities *had* to clamp down harder, as folk were genuinely getting harmed, they then fucked off back to sportsball / manosphere / pub /gym type circles and/or became failed/abusive husbands and fathers (this is why you get "puriteens", its not their fault, they are understandably embarrassed and ashamed by their parents behaviour)
