Old roaming Tom Cat (zwerfkater) but still young at heart. Toots EN, (NL,FR,DE). #DevOpa - interested more in retro tech / culture / aesthetics than new stuff. Also transport and public infrastructure in general (with a UK/European focus)

Welcome to the secret goose shed!

Avatar is a tabby point Siamese cat - header picture is a Stentor FM radio transmitter designed in the Netherlands; popular with small pirate radio broadcasters in late 1980s

they are back on air now, that was a good few minutes with both AM and the stream silent (although curiously there was hiss on the stream, surely they aren't using an *analogue* link for this in this century?)

#RadioCaroline has lost programme audio altogether and is transmitting dead air now (more likely due to the ropey LTE connectivity across East Anglia - nowadays they use a 15cm LTE antenna hidden in the mast of the Ross Revenge (they aren't allowed to use the TX thats on there and I don't think it works anyway as PTT RCD NL ripped out a lot of the vital parts during the 1990 raid - I think RDI (Rijksinspectie Digitale Infrastructuur) literally only returned them last year...

its possible they deliberately increased treble at expense of bass for more range (or because of complaints audio sounded "muddy"), as on my 1990s Coomber schools receiver (100% analogue) I had to turn down treble or else I get hiss/noise from QRM (likely from VDSL/SOGEA line in here)

Some European Communications Ministries (including Ofcom UK and likely RDI NL as well) are allowing full 9 kHz audio bandwidth on AM (increased from 6,3 kHz) once more as compared to 1980s there are way fewer stations on MF (a lot of Northern European commercial stations and even PSBs have stopped using this band - its still used in Southern Europe which is why Caroline can't go to 25 kW or they would interfere with RTVE Spain (MF radio was valuable there during the major power cut)

Anyone else noticed audio on #RadioCaroline 648 kHz MF is slightly quieter and has less bass than previously?

I've found this both in the car and using standalone receivers and its been like that both from the studio based broadcasts and this weekend from #RossRevenge - maybe they've changed the #soundprocessing, a piece of equipment has failed somewhere or the RF power has been turned down to save electricity?

In Britain this is partly true - you still often have to go to college but the fees are less than a degree course and young people (aged 16-19) can often get funding - *but* many employers are too lean to take on apprentices, apprentice wages are still low, employers often holds the final sign off of their qualifications to ransom and the work environment isn't that good (a work colleagues partner ended up quitting being a sparky to start his own business selling ornamental fishes and corals). This is the same throughout all the trades and automotive.

If you look at tradesmen and mechanics these days you see a lot of grey and bald heads and those who aren't originally from outside Britain are mostly in age 40s to 70s..

#AI picture #fail from #YouTube channel about "UK life in 1970s" - 746 #Telephone set appears to be a mix of a correct 746 and a USA Western Electric set (although not as bad a conflation as I've previously seen), its got a coiled *line cord* and a bizzarely oversized "GPO" block terminal (which appears to have been conflated with larger block terminals only used for multiple lines/extension distribution and/or aux bellset, but that wouldn't be put so near the main telephone with its own bell, it usually ends up on the middle stairwell /landing of larger houses so those upstairs wouldn't miss telephone calls)

Ofc if you aren't familiar with the correct infrastructure of this era, it would be easy to assume this is all correct..

@nprofile1q... to get a 12 stretch for a *guilty* plea at Crown Court suggests he would have been looking at 15-20 had it gone to full trial, and "previous bad character" may have been considered (there's rather a lot of traffic offences in his previous, as well as other genuinely bad evil stuff).

Should the music business really be rewarding people like this with careers, no matter how talented they are? It doesn't send a very good message to young people to keep them on the right tracks..

@nprofile1q... this is complete bollocks, we have our own cars, our families are more likely to help us out with housing before we go to the Council, we wouldn't go all the way up North unless there's a good reason to do so, and certainly don't all wear exactly the same tracksuits 😁

I rarely drink nowadays but never trusted them, apart from the corporate spin for simple caveman mindset that they were charging rather a lot for 0,33l of beer, when I would rather have 0,5l 😁

I like real ale, but the days of pubs being centre of neighbourhood are mostly long gone (you have to walk or cycle some distance to get to a good pub which isn't full of angry men/racists etc), and a lot of it (especially in car-dependent rural areas) was from days when a blatant blind eye was turned to DUI amongst middle class white folks, which is no longer tolerated due to the carnage it caused on the roads..

UK tech companies (particularly small/medium size businesses making specialised embedded systems) will also end up supplying materiel to anyone who wants it (including the Iranians!) - a lot of the drones and various other military/surveillance stuff have Raspberry PI in them (which is why no civilians can get the things at the moment)

@nprofile1q... I've known various people over the years who have served in HM Forces and they have all told me their own commanding officers warn them to be careful on joint exercises with USA, the Yanks are so sketchy and cavalier with regard to their own and other NATO troops safety that they are a danger to everyone even when on the same side..

I've also noticed on aircraft trackers that RAF/Army and USAF on training flights take completely different flight paths around East Anglia, the USAF ones take some *really* weird routes (including above residential areas) which look more risky than the ones our trainee pilots take..
