Old roaming Tom Cat (zwerfkater) but still young at heart. Toots EN, (NL,FR,DE). #DevOpa - interested more in retro tech / culture / aesthetics than new stuff. Also transport and public infrastructure in general (with a UK/European focus)

Welcome to the secret goose shed!

Avatar is a tabby point Siamese cat - header picture is a Stentor FM radio transmitter designed in the Netherlands; popular with small pirate radio broadcasters in late 1980s

@nprofile1q... I was thinking they might consider ITVs public service obligations to make regional news onerous, although this has already been downsized to such an extent it might not turn out to be that big a deal (already ITV are getting half their footage/content from social media, and all sorts of other cheaper sources rather than putting "boots on the ground" in the local areas)

(30-40 years ago ITV had 16 seperate regional companies, all of whom made their own unique programming. Ironically a lot of the repeats from these are what are considered "Classic British TV" even today)

@nprofile1q... @nprofile1q... the wider issue here (mentioned in the article, and linked from sources) is a group of private individuals set themselves up as moral enforcers to track down priests who /aren't/ preying on kids (a criminal offence which should be reported to authorities and dealt with), but simply happen to be gay and are socialising with other men in consenting environments, and they did so using the adtech data Grindr had collected on their users in order to make a profit.

This cannot be a good situation for anyone..

I'm seeing claims that #RoyalMail uses this method to hide the dates (machine or hand cancels with stamps usually have a date on them) so folk can't tell how long its taking to deliver the mail, but that would require switching off the part of the automatic machine on the conveyor belt that does the cancellation - its normally only unusually shaped envelopes or anything that can't be auto processed that gets a hand cancel..

I don't recall them either issuing much of a "mea culpa" after the Catholic priest from USA got outed by freelance investigators using Grindrs adtech (and simply buying data from their ad partners, including from "free" countries like Norway) to deanonymise him - ironically a lot of the more liberal leaning Catholic news sites refused to use the investigators findings as they considered the methods used unethical!

@nprofile1q... @nprofile1q... even UK Foundation licence (the lowest level) has quite a few questions on basic electrical safety precautions.

One problem here with this comparison is you (understandably) need a licence to use most radio frequencies as these are a finite resource and direct harm can be caused to others by interference, but no such licence is needed to use social media and implementing one would be problematic (who would enforce it?) -

TBH if it were even possible UK would have already done it by now (even the dog licence was abolished a few years back)
