Old roaming Tom Cat (zwerfkater) but still young at heart. Toots EN, (NL,FR,DE). #DevOpa - interested more in retro tech / culture / aesthetics than new stuff. Also transport and public infrastructure in general (with a UK/European focus)

Welcome to the secret goose shed!

Avatar is a tabby point Siamese cat - header picture is a Stentor FM radio transmitter designed in the Netherlands; popular with small pirate radio broadcasters in late 1980s

@nprofile1q... UK state broadcaster BBC is also working on a different tactic to recover such films (I think these ones were even more far gone than the one in the article you linked to) using lasers, x-ray scanning and digital processing algorithms.

(they have also even been able to get colour video out of less knackered B&W film rolls by extracting remaining chroma information)

@nprofile1q... given that social housing includes sheltered housing for seniors, and Britain has been multicultural for decades this shouldn't even a surprise or cause for alarm - the Windrush generation and other folk from the Commonwealth who were encouraged here for work from mid-late 20th century onwards are going to be in their later years now..

@nprofile1q... I don't even know of that many? Maybe in big cities but thats only a relatively small portion of the population.

Everyone at work who is from overseas has private housing - they can't get leave to remain in the first place unless they are in full time employment (and this is closely checked on, we get audited every so often by Border Agency)

And at least round my way social housing is mixed up amongst other private dwellings, you cannot easily tell which houses are funded by Council/housing associations unless you had access to their property database (I wonder if some Reform / Restore supporters do (perhaps those working in in building maintenance) and are quietly leaking information?

@nprofile1q... took me a while to think of one and its been a very long time since I've actually got a burger from there, but although it was once a big national chain (and initially USA owned) the Wimpy burger franchise has been heavily downsized over the years but remains in corners of East Anglia (its a surreal combination of USA burger culture and small UK cafe/restaurants and remains popular with seniors)

@nprofile1q... looks like there's some dome thing to let water in but keep fishes out (presumably same way they prevent them getting sucked in to any other hydro dam or similar)

I can see what they are hoping to do but I'm a bit unnerved about combination of what appears to be a posh hotel / tourist destination and a prison where by their own description the bulk of inmates are in there for violent crimes (a rich "Western" nation would struggle to rehabilitate such inmates) - although it all seems to be just a concept by some chap in Romania (many km away from Madagascar) for a design competition and no plans or budget to actually build the thing..
