First day of gun season yesterday. After 2 months of being skunked with the bow, I get to ‘see it, kill it’ setup. Went to the stand for a two hour sit during which the rain and wind brought me back to my BUDS days, so I just grinned into it,
Once the rain let up, I went ‘stalk-about’ following the wind pattern. Then I saw a 3 pointer meandering my way, close. I froze, raising my long-range, accurate .308 to my shoulder, aimed and clicked off the safety. Little pointy heard it and raised his head, but went back to grazing. I sighted in the front left shoulder, he moved, I pulled. From 10 yards….
He bounded away scared, and I watched. Then went looking for the blood trail, but nothing. And I mean nothing. After tracking in concentric circles I saw a few of his tracks in the leaves, but NO blood. WTF?
After 40 mins I went back to the scene, got way down on my hands and finally saw 6 white hairs on the leaves. I found a few more hairs along a 30m trail that confirmed a hit but nothing else. I follow the line of direction and finally saw a tuft of white 100 yards down the hill, wedged into a big pile of trees. I hadn’t missed after all.
I just barely missed the front shoulder and with a front quartering shot, had hit one lung but destroyed the guts. Lesson here, front quarter shots are a bit particular. I spent the rest of the morning hauling his weight up the hill and through downed trees before I could get him on a cart. Workout done for the day.
Anyway, thought you might enjoy the story. Happy hunting!

Great analysis on the Israeli campaign. How many other entities might be doing this? What happens to that data? Global mapping and mass surveillance are in high gear now. Step 1 complete…. Next comes developing target packages according to policy directives.

#homesteadchallenge. Cicadias! Everywhere. The 14 year cycle has brought millions of cicadas out in Tennessee. Here I am, working to live off the land I live on by growing or foraging as much of my food as possible.
Did you know these little critters come is swarms because every thing loves to eat them. So… I went foraging. Easily caught 4 in 5 mins, froze them (to humanely kill them) and cooked them up in an air fryer. They tasted outstanding and are full of protein and good fats. They pair well with the strawberries that are coming in too. Maybe I’ll start selling them for sats…

#homesteadchallenge Week 6: an eye-opening discovery that Borscht is the ultimate hack for winter homesteading survival cooking. Beets, cabbage, carrots all grow in the cold, and combined with venison from the hunting season, it’s one of the most delicious and filling soups I’ve ever had. I did add some micro greens to the finished bowl to give it more nutrition and crunch. Living off only what I can grow and forage is the best way to learn!

#homesteadchallenge Week 4: Deer Jerky keeps the muscles moving as hauling maple sap and cooking it with wood draws energy! The maple syrup at the end gives a boost though, since harvested greens and tomato soup only goes so far. These are the lean months of homestead living but provides focus! Here’s some pics of the sugaring process:

Week #2 of my Homestead Challenge! Breakfast was pine needle tea, and for lunch, I made tomato soup from frozen tomatoes with homegrown sprouts. Dinner was more tomato soup with sprouts, deer jerky, and a peach smoothie. Not everything is easy—I might run out of deer by April, so I’m hoping the chickens will come online before then. Onward! 🌿 #HomesteadChallenge #SelfSufficiency
