True, but the typical "nuke 'em till they glow" alternative approaches people keep proposing would have end states that would make a "victory" far worse than a typical "defeat".

When all the power projection capabilities are centered around carrier strike groups and surface-to-ship ballistic missiles mean you effectively can't use them, what is left? ICBMS? Real, actual mass murder in an attempt to prevent a theoretical mass murder in a future where the "bad guys" strike first? Makes no strategic or moral sense. Especially in a world where there are 90 million of them and there's always going to be survivors screaming for vengeance.

It's always funny how every time the USA loses a war, the same people always come out of the woodwork to inform everybody that we didn't REALLY lose it and we could have won easily if we felt like it. You'd think the USA would have felt like winning once or twice over the last 40 years, huh? Maybe we should just stop getting into wars if everyone agrees that we don't have the secret sauce needed to translate the effectiveness of our military on paper into actual preferred flags flying over enemy capital cities.
