On amethyst if you go to Setting-> Relays- Scroll down to almost the bottom. Where it says "Connected Relays" There is about 300 relays on mine.
I suspect this is why spam is getting through to those...
That is the outbox model of connecting to relay.
For example, I have my own haven relay where i post my notes. Now if you decide to follow me on Nostr then your amethyst client will connect to my relay to fetch my notes and show it to you.
So if you follow a lot of people and they each use 4-5 different relays to post their note then amethyst has to connect and fetch data from all those relays, remove the duplicates and then show it to you.
There is a section called "proxy relays" on the same settings page which you can use to get around this outbox model. You can add some relays there and then amethyst will fetch notes from those relays only and not connect to 300-400 relays.
But remember, if someone you follow, doesn't post notes on the relay you added in proxy relay section then you will never see their notes. 😅
