We finished digging the irrigation ditch so we could test how it flows into the field before it gets shut down for the Winter. You sure can get a lot done with a tractor!

I suggested going for heat capacitance with a stone hearth before, but I was assuming a small shelter. 7'x9' is pretty big, you'd need to do a LOT of fire babysitting, and burn a LOT of wood. How much...

I'm pretty used to sleeping in the cold, so I'm not worried about keeping it hot all night. Mostly that I just want some place during the day to be warm.

Six feet down might be a better idea, but I'm a little bit concerned about whether the tractor can pull that off. Also, I don't want to use too much diesel considering how expensive it is right now.

7x9 down six feet would be a lot, but just a narrow place to sit/sleep might be more doable. Re: the warm nook within a larger dry, cold shelter idea

pretty hard core setup 😃 The rocks made me think of a fireplace. A bit of masonry, or perhaps clay could also hold the stones together. That would give you a lot of thermal mass that radiates heat even after the fire dies down.

The hot-rock hearth is the move. I've been sweating in below freezing camping conditions because I buried some hot rocks under my tent. Would make winter way more seamless
