My guess is AI and technology, for many, will have, at worst, a neutral effect on memory. My reasoning is that spelling autocorrection has reduced the rate at which I mispell words rather than made me more likely to mispell words and I'm good at remembering a route even if I used a map the first time. Where, speaking personally, there is a danger is that curiosity makes it very easy distract myself and there is a danger of not focussing on things in-depth, which is covered later in that article. I don't confuse a Perplexity.ai (which I have found useful) explanation of something with in-depth knowledge and I sometimes hit the limit of an AI's knowledge - some of them are crap when that happens. The most annoying one is inferring what people usually mean when what people usually mean is absolutely not what I'm asking. It's not that I gave it an idiotic prompt it's just that it's more likely people make a mistake so it assumes I'd made a similar mistake. Prompting the man computer symbiosis equivalent of Basil Fawlty giving his Mini Metro a damn good thrashing. Plus a lot of stuff in the training sets is as likely to be wrong as the people who initially produced it.

The problem with AI versus human creators is that a human creator can boost their influences or things they're a fans of consuming, like Kurt Cobain with Daniel Johnson or Mudhoney, or Taylor Swift having Paramore on the eras tour. There are countless examples in different forms. Me referencing Red Plenty recently. Sometimes, but not always, art is complicated, and I don't think an artist of any kind is at all obligated to list their references or explain. My principle problem with AI is that it's like a human creator but always without tribute or references to the things that influenced it. Also it's a commercial, derivative, use of work(s) other people spent time making, without even meagre recompense. It'd be bad form if a person did it and worse if a business did it. I think it will force people to up their game though, which is good.

Framed #752 (no. I watched The Northman a very violent, mostly historically accurate, 'Viking' revenge drama. It was good but appropriately sprinkled with pre Christian Norse mythology, which, in some ways, explains quite how dangerous the Northmen were, because, if a person truly believed those things, they were dangerous by default. It's kind of the Northern European/Scandinavian rock and roll years before they got engineering and accounting degrees, got into wine, Calvados, French and Mediterranean chicks, became Normans and settled down, or formed empires leading to things like The Great Northern War. Family in Sweden tell me the runestones are mostly stuff like X died valiantly at sea - the posher stone memorial equivalent of death notices in a local newspaper. There is a Norwegian comedy show in English called Norsemen, on Netflix, which has a similarly historically accurate take of pre Christian Norway except not bone crunchingly violent and very funny. I suspect it's a Norwegian reaction to TV and cinema 'Viking' dramas, and it's well worth a watch.)
