I've got chickens in a much colder area. As long as ours are out of the wind, they're fine. We've got breeds that are better for freezing temps (Orpingtons, Easter Eggers, etc). Build for *at least* double what you think you'll eventually have. Chicken math is real. I built a large run, small coup. They all roost in the run and use the coop for laying. Clear plastic wrap around the run during the winter does the trick. I'd prob skip the coup if I did it again in favor of some nesting boxes in the run. Make some room for their feed and other stuff. Consider a big galvanized trash can for feed...it keeps the mice at bay. If its not going to freeze, you don't need a water heater...that's really the only thing that's special. Sort of like babies, you'd be surprised how little they really "need". Good luck!
