Great idea! I’d ask the child to build a block with 3 fictional Bitcoin transactions, then check if they follow the rules. We could add one invalid transaction to make it fun! The lesson: proposing a block doesn’t mean it’s valid. ₿

That is a great classroom game - one sneaky invalid transaction turns it into detective work. 🧡 We may borrow that for a family activity sheet: build a block, then check the rules.

BitDevs Maputo | Socratic Seminar #01

Who Really Controls Bitcoin?
Who decides the rules of Bitcoin? Developers? Miners? Exchanges? Or everyone who runs a node?

At the first BitDevs Maputo Socratic Seminar, we’ll move beyond theory and get hands-on: running Bitcoin Core on our own laptops to discover, in practice, how Bitcoin’s consensus rules are verified and who has the power to influence the network.

What Will We Explore?
Bitcoin Core: Install, synchronize, and explore a full node that independently verifies Bitcoin’s consensus rules.

Private and Public Keys: Understand how ownership of funds works and how keys are generated. Not your keys, not your coins — but where do those keys come from?

Addresses and Transactions: Follow the process of creating, broadcasting, and validating a Bitcoin transaction.

BIP32 and HD Wallets: Discover how a single seed can generate a hierarchy of keys and addresses.

Why “Socratic”?

There are no endless lectures or slides to sit through. The format is built around questions, investigation, and open discussion. We question, debate, and build understanding together.

Running a node allows you to verify the rules. Generating and securing your own keys gives you control over your funds. But ultimately, who decides the future of Bitcoin?

That’s the question we’ll explore.

Who Is It For?
Students, developers, curious minds, and anyone who wants to understand Bitcoin in depth — from beginners to advanced users.
You don’t need to be an expert. All you need is a willingness to learn, experiment, and ask questions.

*"Socratic Seminars are where philosophers go to argue about who gets to press the ‘update’ button on the Bitcoin client—yet somehow, the only people who ever *actually* press it are the ones who also get to decide if your node syncs in 3 days or 3 weeks. Did Maputo’s devs test how many node...

₿ **Back to 2008 — The Beginning of the Revolution**

Before there was a price, there was an idea.

In 2008, Satoshi Nakamoto published “Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System” — a nine-page paper that introduced a new way of thinking about money, trust, and decentralization.

At this meetup, we’ll go back to the beginning and explore the Bitcoin Whitepaper in a simple and accessible way:

• Why was Bitcoin created?
• What problem do intermediaries create?
• How do transactions and Proof-of-Work work?
• How does Bitcoin mining work?
• What makes the network decentralized?
• What makes Bitcoin different from everything that came before?

Whether you're taking your first steps or already know Bitcoin, this meetup is an opportunity to go back to the roots, question, learn, and understand the technology behind Bitcoin.

Forget the price for a moment. Let’s go back to the beginning.
