Chemnitz was the industrial heartbeat of East Germany. In 1953 Chemnitz was in-fact renamed to: Karl Marx Stadt by East Germany's communist leadership. Chemnitz was supposed to become the model city of a communist working society, as we now know that plan didn't come to materialise.

Chemnitz is still today struggling massively from the economic collapse that happened to East Germany after the collapse of the country. The population has declined with more than 20% since 1990 and young people are still leaving on mass.

In 2025 Chemnitz has been named European Capital of Culture so I went to explore how Chemnitz is doing and to find out what happens to a city post economic collapse?

My legs felt as if they were made of cement. Each step was a battle against the altitude. With each breath the air got thinner. The 5350m peak was looking down on me, almost arrogantly so— as if it was saying come and get me, if you dare!

As a kid, brought up in a very non religious Denmark, to whom the yearly church visit for the Christmas mass, was my idea of hell on earth, it seems unfathomable that I’m now a 29 year old man with a fairly close relationship to God. Whatever that even means.
