From what I can tell, ATProto was about making it possible for Twitter/X and eventually Facebook to defuse any monopoly / oligopoly regulations by surrounding themselves with a circle of limited-federation sites ... and implementing limited interoperability between their platforms. I do understand that Musk's purchase destroyed that, and they've since stopped talking about it, but when they were proposed and the protocol's initial design happened, that was their plan.

I don't try to fool myself that they have any strong interest in decentralization, dispersing power so that no one, including BlueSky itself could block, ban, or otherwise deplatform users on instances they don't host.
