Kia ora! I'm a #nature nut, addict of #iNaturalist NZ — Mātaki Taiao, and an #ecologist at #LincolnUniversity in #Aotearoa-#NewZealand.

I spend an inordinate amount of my time counting nature to watch what's changing (see https://wildcounts.org/).

It turns out one of those spaces in the scientific name was not like the other. When I pasted both into BBEdit and set it to "Show invsibles", it indicated that one of the spaces was not a space, but instead a "\x{A0}" (which I think is a no-break space symbol). One of the variables had its "Rhipidura fuliginosa" pasted from a website into Excel then loaded into R. The other "Rhipidura fuliginosa" had been typed into the R script directly.

While R and RStudio didn't show any difference, only one of the two spaces was really a space.

Lesson learned!

Part of my day with a couple of postgrad students was solving this mystery in #RStats.

It took us a while to figure it out. At first we were completely perplexed. It was like R was saying 1 == 1 was FALSE. We tried all sorts of other things (weird data structure? RStudio misbehaving? Are we sure there's not a spelling error?) before figuring out what was going on.

Answer below.

Most of my afternoon today was spent in #QGIS with one of my Masters students Dee Patel.

We're preparing my long-term bird monitoring data around Christchurch, NZ, for analysis. Today we gridded up my four standard bike transects into 1 km sections, surrounded by approximately 1 km square polygons.

Dee's particularly interested in how the conversion of farmland to urban housing affects birds.

Next Dee will be doing some clever analysis of my distance sampled bird counts to estimate the density of each bird species in each grid cell in each month over the past 12–23 years (depending on the route). She'll then compare those densities with land use changes from the NZ land cover database.

It's going to be interesting to see what patterns emerge.
