Kia ora! I'm a #nature nut, addict of #iNaturalist NZ — Mātaki Taiao, and an #ecologist at #LincolnUniversity in #Aotearoa-#NewZealand.

I spend an inordinate amount of my time counting nature to watch what's changing (see https://wildcounts.org/).

@nprofile1q... This is terrific! It’s such a great idea to spell it all out explicitly like this. I’m already following your code of conduct, although I’ve just been ambivalent about the quality of Turnitin. You make a good point that it’s a for-profit business that’s exploitative because it’s built upon the labor of students.

The tricky thing is going to be with how you (and we) navigate this when students purposefully choose to break the student code of conduct (as some inevitably will).

@nprofile1q... The Global Justice Report reminds me of a passage from The Hitchhikers' Guide to the Galaxy:

“And then, one Thursday, nearly two thousand years after one man had been nailed to a tree for saying how great it would be to be nice to people for a change, a girl sitting on her own in a small café in Rickmansworth suddenly realized what it was that had been going wrong all this time, and she finally knew how the world could be made a good and happy place. This time it was right, it would work, and no one would have to get nailed to anything.”

The time *is* right, and this report shows that it *will* work.

Here's hoping we shift in this direction.

Yikes, it's the first week of winter and flowering cherries are already blooming. Is that ok, @joncounts? https://mastodon.nzoss.nz/system/media_attachments/files/116/691/272/752/932/981/original/9be...

@nprofile1q... Yikes, indeed. It's very early.

I saw my first cherry in flower today too. Nature is getting increasingly out of whack as we steer the world's climate into uncharted waters.

We'll soon see whether these are just a few confused trees and most of them flower in August-September, as they usually do. Or, not.
